Furnace Making Loud Noises? | Furnace Repair Slinger

Have you noticed a noise coming from your furnace?

As the cold weather creeps back into Milwaukee and Slinger, people are turning on their furnaces for the first time this season and sometimes hearing some non familiar sounds.

Your Furnace can make a range of sounds depending on whether they are oil, gas or electric and depending on the manufacturer. Most annoying sounds are harmless and easily fixed. Other sounds suggest serious problems, some of which can cause dangerous carbon monoxide to leak into your house.

Proper maintenance is essential in keeping your furnace running in top condition.  It is always recommended to have your furnace maintained regularly and it is best to call an HVAC professional to have the furnace maintained. There are many specifications unique to each unit and it is not the easiest to perform for DIY homeowners.

Start-Up Sounds

If your furnace starts with a loud "whomp or Bang," the air to fuel mixture is likely wrong or your ignition is delayed. If your furnace hums or roars loudly when it starts, the inducer motor is probably bad. If your gas furnace clicks when you start it, the flame condenser might be dirty. If your furnace howls loudly when it kicks on, your heat exchanger might be cracked. You should get that fixed immediately because it can leak dangerous carbon monoxide.

Explosions & Roaring

When you hear a loud sound like an explosion when you turn on your oil furnace, you likely have a weak transformer, a clogged nozzle or you need to reset the electrodes. If your furnace roars, your burner might be dirty. A dirty burner will not light correctly and when it does light, the gas makes a torch sound as it shoots back to the hole where the gas mixes with air. If the pilot light of your natural gas furnace gets hit by the draft of air from the roof vent, it can flare up, making a roaring sound.

Rumbles

If your furnace rumbles, unburned oil from a dripping or dirty nozzle may be collecting on the floor. When the furnace shuts off, the oil on the floor continues burning, making the rumbling sound. You need to get this fixed because it can cause a build-up of carbon monoxide. If the blower of your furnace makes a low, loud sound like a train, its bearings are probably bad, and you may have to replace it.

Rattles

If your furnace rattles or bangs loudly for about 30 seconds before the blower kicks in, your heat exchanger may have developed a crack. A cracked heat exchanger can cause carbon monoxide to enter your ductwork, and you should get it fixed immediately. Children's toys and other small objects can make their way into the recirculation system and get sucked into the fan box where they bounce and rattle around.

Other Sounds

If the blower on your furnace moans and groans, its bearings could be shot. If your oil furnace whines loudly, you may have bad bearings in your draft inducer motor, which will eventually lock up and have to be replaced. If your electric forced air furnace hums loudly, something might be loose and transmitting the noise through the duct-work. A bad gas valve can cause buzzing that is transmitted through the gas line.
